In a former blacksmith's workshop in a tiny Lake District village, the first restaurant in northern England to win three stars — built around its own farm.
Simon Rogan opened L'Enclume in an 800-year-old Cartmel smithy in 2002 (the name is French for "anvil"), and over two decades turned a remote Cumbrian village into a serious dining destination. Almost everything on the long, ever-changing tasting menu comes from "Our Farm," a 12-acre plot a mile away that Rogan designed for the kitchen — he likes to say his job is growing the perfect carrot rather than cooking it perfectly. The signature "Anvil" dessert nods to the building's past; the village now holds his sister restaurants, a shop, and rooms scattered among the cottages so you can stay the night. Three Michelin stars (a UK-first for the north, awarded 2022), a Green Star, and La Liste's No.1 restaurant in the world for 2024.
